Baseball legend, Babe Ruth once said, “The way a team plays as a
whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of
individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club
won’t be worth a dime.”
If you had to choose members from your organization to form a
business team, whom would you choose? What characteristics would this
individual need to have to be considered a Team Player? It is a term
that is thrown around so often, it has lost some of its meaning.
There is no doubt that teams need strong players, so here are some qualities to look for when seeking the most effective ones.
All for One and One for All!
1. Consistently Reliable
This team member can be counted on to get work done and follow
through to meet commitments. They deliver excellent performance all the
time, not just occasionally.
2. Excellent Communicator
It is important for Team Players to speak up and express their ideas
directly and clearly, while being respectful and considerate to fellow
team members. They must communicate constructively and do not shy away
from making their point, but in the most confident and positive manner
possible.
3. Active Listener
In order for a team to function properly, it needs good listeners.
Teams need players who are disciplined enough to consider different
viewpoints without creating an argument or debate. They also are able to
take criticism from others without getting defensive.
4. Active Participant
Good team players participate actively. They are prepared for
meetings and are fully engaged. They know when to listen and when to
speak up in discussions. They take the initiative to make things happen
and are determined to make the team succeed as a whole.
5. Open & Sharing
Team players are good at sharing. They share knowledge and experience
with their fellow team members to keep them informed. It is important
for team members to feel comfortable talking with each other and keep
each other in the loop to ensure the job gets done well.
6. Flexible
A good team player is able to adapt to situations as they change.
They do not get easily stressed out and they do not complain. They are
also able to see two sides of an issue and make compromises when needed.
They are firm with their opinions, but open to what others have to
offer.
7. Problem Solver
When working in a team, it is almost inevitable that problems will
arise. A good Team Player is willing to handle all different kinds of
issues with the intention to find a solution. They do not blame others
or avoid dealing with the situation. They are motivated to solve the
problem at hand.
