We are looking to review our internal dress code policy (which was written about 15 years ago) and are looking for some suggestions or examples other agencies have in place for their internal staff.  Our dress code is business but more on the casual side.  (We're between business and jean casual).  Tattoo and piercing policy suggestions are also welcome!  Thank you!

We just switched our dress code to a casual to included jeans.

I think employees should be able to wear shorts and t- shirts to work.  I will say when I worked at C.H. Robison my best work was done in shorts and a t- shirt because that what I enjoy wearing.  There are studies to back up the casual work environment.

My previous employer, Shelter Insurance, switched to a "Dress for your day." policy about a year or two before I left. This was a 75+ year organization with a fairly conservative business culture so this was a major change. People took ownership of their decisions knowing what was going on in their department that day and who if anyone they would be interacting with outside of their direct team. I was a remote worker but I was on the committee that helped institute the change for the corporate offices and the feedback was amazing. We just took the mindset that if we can trust these folks to complete vital business tasks surely we can trust them to dress in a way appropriate for their day. It wasn't a free for all obviously, there were still rules but it ranged from essentially appropriate casual to full business attire. Depending on the flow of your office this may not work at all but I always thought it was a unique way to go about it.

They now use this as a recruiting tool and its featured prominently on their website:

Dress for Your Day Dress Code: Shelter has implemented a "Dress for Your Day" policy intended to allow a more relaxed dress code when you have a work day that does not include meetings with customers, visitors and the public.

Nick, That is a great way of putting it.  My company uses something similar but I like their explanation.

    Thanks,

    Hi Nicole,

I have struggled with this at our firm. For many years we were suits and before covid started to loosen to Professional casual. Of course, hybrid and remote work just made all of these policies gray. We are bringing back professionally smart dress shirts for teams meetings and in the office, clean jeans, dress shirts, sweaters, and our swag I find the hard part is coming up with the correct terminology that all generations understand.

At the end of the day, the most important question is what kind of culture do you want inside your business and represented by the people that work at your firm?!

    Best,
    Jason

We have a fully casual dress policy that is inclusive of any tattoos or piercings people want to wear. This is the only employee benefit/policy that we have other than paid childbirth/parental leave that I have received gratitude/thanks for having. It costs nothing to implement and the benefits are incalculable. Making people wear things they hate wearing or are uncomfortable wearing is not positive for morale or culture. Who are they dressing for? So ownership or leadership can look at what they want to see? I have never understood that mentality. I highly doubt even in the most conservative of business cultures that professional dress is the thin line standing between success and disaster. High morale and motivation lead to success in staffing. Dress codes achieve neither of those and are a cost burden for employees to bear, particularly younger employees.

Obviously if you have client interactions our staff dress appropriately for those situations.
