  • 1.  Background Check Delays

Is anyone else experiencing serious delays with getting background checks back?  We have been using Sentry Link for a number of years and have never had a problem, but recently, it is taking 2 and 3 weeks to get some of our results back.  This is costing us money since we cannot let people start without them.  Any recommendations on other companies to use?

    Thank you!

Hi Jennifer!  We have used ScoutLogic for a couple years now and are extremely happy with their service.  We have not seen many delays for our requests, primarily for Virginia information.  Give Chip Ramsey a call.

Jennifer, we too have been seeing delays in background screening - mainly as it pertains to the broad screen check.  Normally, we start the screening and then just wait.  Now, are we have started to stay on top of them a lot more.  If it hasn't returned in the "usual" amount of time, we are calling the company to see what the hold-up is.  So far, that is working quite well and I believe it has strengthened the relationship we have with our screener!

    Good Luck To You!

    Hi Jennifer,

It feels like screening is all taking a bit longer over the past year–slower than usual.
However, we've recently had drug test delays due to labs beings knocked out by Hurricane Ida :(

Recently 2 states, California and Michigan, passed laws prohibiting the use of date of birth as a verifier when searching for criminal history with Michigan's law going further to prohibit all other types of additional verifiers (Social Security number, addresses, Driver's License number, etc) . As you are aware the date of birth is considered a primary identifier when it comes to matching an applicant to potential criminal history. Sometimes additional verifiers like addresses history can be used but Michigan's new law prohibits use of any additional types of verifiers leaving just a name match as the only search option. You can imagine how bad this could be if your applicant has a common name.

    Hi Jennifer,
I'm sorry that you experiencing those delays, timing is extremly important in securing new business, more important in staffing.  You should go back to Sentry Link and ask them about it first before looking into changing background check vendors.  As Chris Cragan mentioned below, California and Michigan have began redacting date of birth from all records from any public access terminals at the courts.

Since court records are recorded and filed by name and date of birth only, and they are the 2 main identifiers, this creates a major problem when verifying records on an applicant. Unfortunately there are even some Michigan Courts that have even decided not to respond to research requests.

In both states, if there are possible records under a name, the court researcher will then request the court clerk to pull the case file to search for a date of birth to verify the records. It seems the date  of birth may still be on the paper files, fo now.  Every county court may work a little bit differently, but in general that is the current process and is most likely why you are experiencing the delays.  In addition, in Los Angeles, when court researchers have possible records to have the court clerks to search, they are only allowed to have 5 case copies per day.

That being said, different background check  companies do have different court researches, and depending on how deligent they are, that can make a difference in your turn around time. Records with no "hits" should be coming back in the normal time frame, usually 1 to 2 days.  If there are possible records, we have been seeing approximately results in 5 days on average. Again, this all depends on the county.  Is there a particular county or counties that you are seeing these major delays in?  Again, I would go back to Sentry and ask them about it before looking into switching vendors.

One more thing to think about, everyone is experencing this issue, even your competition.  It's universal in those states. So if your client is asking to do a background check that requires a county court search, your competition must be doing the same thing.  If you are losing business because competitors are getting the background check done faster, they may not be doing county criminal search that your client actually requires, and maybe only doing an "instant database search."

Long delays and price increases. I have been with MBI for over 15 years. I am happy with them but they are at the mercy of the courts and counties. The cost of a background in the State of New York is now $95.00. Outrageous I think.
