  • 1.  Creating/Setting up a customized app to share jobs & other related info

    Posted 08-24-2020 22:44
I'm aware the bigger staffing/recruiting companies have their own apps they use to attract talent, people can apply and receive job notifications that match their skills as well as a list of other items as well.

Has anyone had any success in setting up their own app or finding somewhere to get an app at a cost-competitive balance? I recently talked with a database developer about creating our own app for IOS/Android and it seemed the upkeep cost of an "app" would be quite high, especially with security updates.

With today's job seekers being more reliant on using mobile devices, I was thinking this would be an easier way to recruit and attract talent in a more effective manner.

Just looking to see if anyone else has had luck in this area.

    Thanks everyone!

Good morning! I worked in software dev for startups prior to where I am now and really just want to reinforce you don't need an app to be competitive on mobile devices. In fact, the app stores are probably a detrimental platform to form your business operations towards, due to the upkeep necessities being nearly duplicate of what it takes to have a mobile-responsive and accessibility-friendly website.

Here are just a few reasons off the cuff.

    1) You don't benefit from any digital marketing from your website, on your app. Primarily SEO efforts are what I am pointing at here. Display remarketing is also fairly limited since the app cookies and tags are relying on a device-level of privacy settings.
    2) No one can find your app by searching a search engine (Like DuckDuckGo or Google) but instead they will find the app store, and thereby all the competitor listings that would appear as well. If they found your website first, based on how it looks and the tone, they may not go further to click into your app anyways.
    3) Mobile app platforms come and go, you will have to cater to their updates and policy changes (which at this point they're quarterly). This takes either an agency (which if they found this vertical among others, its going to be predatory in service pricing at best to make their margins) or this takes hiring in-house someone with technical experience. I would almost venture to say if you went with the latter, they'd encourage website work instead.

If I found your website and am seeing it correctly.. my stance would be there is a larger benefit to working on your website to attract and retain candidates. Any alerts, notifications, perks, etc that a mobile app would boast are mirrored in capabilities with a normal website function.

    Matthew,

We thought about developing our own; but the continued cost to maintain and connect to our ATS we decided it was easier to look at what was already developed.  We decided on TimeSaved, which quickly connected to our ATS and they are forward thinking in their future development plan.  Its helped us in several ways that I do not think would happen with just making your website mobile optimized.

    • More effective deploying employees into the field.  helped increase fill rate and reduce time to fill
    • Increase our applicant completion rate to interview by providing a better applicant experience.
    • Communication with employees using the app messenger tool (better replies than text messenger, email and an employee picking up the phone.
    • Customer Service - (Better communication, Easier check ins, faster response to absences and NSNC to get a replacement out to the job site.)

An app is by no means the all end solution... it is a tool to help the recruiters become more efficient so they can spend more time with the employees.
