I have been in this business for 23 years and don't understand what the difference is in Staff Augmentation and Recruitment.  I am looking at a bid and it specifically says that this not for recruiting services but for Staff Augmentation.  Can someone explain the difference to me.  Confused in Texas!!

    Hello Sue,

In my experience, "Staff Augmentation" signifies an IT staffing proposal.  That has been the difference that I have seen in most cases.  I think in the IT space that it isn't popular to call our services temporary staffing, but to call it "Staff Augmentation".  Curious to know if indeed the proposal before you is technical staffing to confirm my hypothesis!

I think it is all about how it is branded or marketed...I think it is easier to call a candidate and ask if they are interested in a role as part of a Staff Augmentation contract rather than call a candidate and ask if they would like a temporary technical position.

    Best,

"Staff Augmentation" is well defined, but it might be used differently by your client.  I wouldn't guess.  Read on:

You can find one definition on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staff_augmentation "Staff augmentation is an outsourcing strategy which is used to staff a project and respond to the business objectives. The technique consists of evaluating the existing staff and then determining which additional skills are required. One possible advantage of this approach is that it may leverage existing resources as well as utilize outsourced services and contract workers."

I would assume that you would participate in this as a process with your client's HR team and/or leadership at the corporate level.

SHRM uses the term augmentation regularly, and integrates it into the process of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the automation of jobs. Where firms know that jobs will become obsolete, the firm/company "augments" the internal FTE's doing the soon-to-be-automated (or outsourced) jobs through the transition using two key factors for the transition.  Factor A) the firm/company trains desired-to-be-retained existing FTE's to do new roles in the company.  And, B) the firm/company may replace the waning positions being replaced by automation with a temporary work force knowing that the staffing model will accelerate and augment the transition in a cost effective way.  Temporary staffing (or staff augmentation) in this case allows for buffering operations in the case of unmet demand by automation, or in the case of bumps in the road during the implementation of AI and automation.  (If you are a SHRM member, you can find some interesting articles and research on this topic.)

To your case, I would suggest asking the client what "they" mean by "augmentation."  And/or ask if it is any of the known models they are applying..., that's a good entry point to become a trusted partner of your client.  Never anything wrong with asking, and especially if you have done a little research to bring to the table.

I don't know..but could staff augmentation be working with EXISTING staff to figure out which puzzle piece (people) fits into which project.....versus recruiting for NEW staff?

    Hello and happy Thursday!

Staff Augmentation is super trendy as a buzzword right now and our colleague pointed it out correctly - it's HUGE in IT.  Augmentation is a better way to say "outsource developer" essentially.  Global technical professionals are sourced, assessed and hired on a temporary basis but managed by the company that hired them.  The difference from normal outsource technical team members is that this "augmented" staff is dedicated to one client / project at a time.

It's directionally oriented towards the hiring party since in software "outsource" is almost a profanity.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Sue,

The current usage of 'Staff Augmentation' is an interesting topic

We provide IT and Finance Staffing and Recruiting focused on the New York and Boston marketplace and in our circles Staff Augmentation has evolved into meaning Staffing (i.e. temporary, contract, consulting,…) vs. Recruiting (i.e. full time direct hire placement on either a contingency or retained search basis).

When we started our business 25 years ago folks discussing Staff Augmentation were primarily referencing IT outsourcing, but over time we have seen the usage of Staff Augmentation expand broadly such that now it is often utilized to simply indicate Staffing vs. Recruiting.

    I hope this helps.
