  • 1.  Spiffs for Back Office Staff

    Good morning,

    I am trying to develop a reward system for our Back Office staff, i.e. onboarding, finance and payroll.  Does anyone have some areas that can be measured and rewarded?  I know DSO is one but I especially need spiff ideas for payroll.

    Hi Cheryl, 

    Great Recruiters has a few customers that use contractor/candidate feedback as part of the bonus for their onboarding and contractor care teams. 

    So their bonus is based on hitting the number and timeliness of completing onboarding and  for creating a great experience for candidates with a focus on driving retention and increased referrals. 

    You can likely do something similar for payroll as well.

    I would suggest that rather that trying to find business performance measures for your back office team, you turn this into a process improvement initiative. Call together your various department/functional leaders and determine what the current top 3-5 issues are that are hindering efficient operations and then set measurable improvement targets for each quarter. You can then establish your incentive compensation based on accomplishing those objectives. 


    Establish regular (weekly?) meetings to review progress and maintain forward momentum. Make sure, however, the responsibility for action remains with each functional team. Celebrate wins and communicate this initiative throughout the entire company.

    One way is to come up with the scoring matrix and have the different stake holders score each back-office department (monthly or quarterly). Incentives can be based on the scores.
